Defining Neighborhood Functions

Neighbourhood functions define which locations surrounding each cell in a study area should be considered influential. The Neighbourhood Definition tool allows users to configure preset or custom neighbourhood functions.

Tool Parameters

Save Neighborhood Definition

  • Save the Neighborhood Definition (.nb) file to your PC.
  • Allows opening, editing, and saving new versions of existing .nb files.

Specify Neighborhood Dimensions and Type

  • Control neighborhood function dimensions using the Neighborhood Dimensions buttons or integer input fields.
  • Select from present Neighborhood Type options or define a custom neighborhood configuration.
  • Modify the relative influencing locations with respect to the central cell. Provide 1s to include the location as an influencer of the central cell and 0s to indicate the location should have no effect on the central cell state.
  • Click the “Reset” button to clear the Neighborhood configuration and revert back to the default values.

Saving Neighborhood Definition Files

  • To save the Neighborhood Definition, click “Save As” and provide a descriptive file name in the dialog window. Neighborhood Definition files will be persisted with an “.nb” extension supported by the Geographic Automata Add-In tools.
  • If you are editing an existing file and wish to overwrite the file contents, click the “Save” button.
  • If you want to save the definition as a new file, you can click “Save As” or modify the file name directly in the input field and click “Save.”

If you close the Neighborhood Definition tool window without saving the neighborhood configuration, values will be cleared and cannot be restored.

Loading Neighborhood Definition Files

  • Click the “Open” button and locate the .nb file you wish to view or edit in the tool window.
